PI Tchaikovsky wrote music for only three ballets. But they are all masterpieces and are part of the repertoire of theaters around the world. We will consider a summary of the ballet The Sleeping Beauty.
Creation of a work
Having finished the Fifth Symphony and the opera The Enchantress and reflecting on the idea of \u200b\u200bThe Queen of Spades, Pyotr Ilyich received an order from the head of the Imperial Theaters Directorate I. A. Vsevolzhsky to create a ballet. Initially, the composer was offered a choice of two themes: "Salammbo" and "Ondine". However, Tchaikovsky himself refused the first, and the libretto of the second was considered unsuccessful. At the end of 1888 (December), Marius Ivanovich Petipa gave Pyotr Ilyich the libretto of the ballet The Sleeping Beauty. The composer already had a brief, musical, sketchy: the prologue, the first and second acts. It was only January 1889. The third act and the apotheosis were composed in spring and summer, also during a trip to Paris, Marseille, Constantinople, Tiflis and Moscow. In August, rehearsals were already underway, and at the same time the composer was finishing the ballet instrumentation. During this time, Tchaikovsky and Petipa met frequently, making changes and clarifications. The score of The Sleeping Beauty reflects the maturity of Pyotr Ilyich. It has a general solidity, careful development of situations, pictures and images.
Performance staging
M. Petipa, who possessed an outstanding artistic imagination, developed each number, considering its duration, rhythm and character. The famous theater artist M.I.Bocharov made sketches of the scenery, and Vsevolzhsky himself, in addition to writing the libretto with Petipa, also drew sketches for costumes. The performance should be incredibly beautiful and historically accurate - this was what all the participants wanted.
The premiere took place in St. Petersburg during the Christmas holidays in 1890, January 3. The festive performance caused a mixed reaction. Some of the critics considered the ballet too deep (but they just wanted to have fun). The audience gave their answer. He expressed himself not in thunderous applause, but in 100 percent fees and in a full hall at every performance. The talent of the choreographer, his high exactingness to the actors and the brilliant music merged into a single whole. On stage, the audience saw an incredibly beautiful and deeply thought-out performance. It was a joint creation of two geniuses: the ballet The Sleeping Beauty. A summary will follow below.

We begin to present a summary of the ballet The Sleeping Beauty. In the ceremonial hall of the palace of King Florestan, celebrations in honor of the christening of the baby princess begin. The invited ladies and gentlemen line up in beautiful groups according to the instructions of the stewards. Everyone is waiting for the arrival of the royal couple and the invited fairies. To the solemn sounds of fanfare, the king and queen enter the hall. Behind them, the nurse's nurses carry the princess's cradle. After this, it is announced that the fairies have arrived.
The last one is the Lilac fairy - the main goddaughter of the princess. Gifts are prepared for each of them. At this time, news arrives, and the forgotten, uninvited fairy Carabosse appears. She's awful. Her cart is being pulled by nasty rats.
The butler throws himself at her feet, begging for forgiveness. Carabosse pulls out his hair with a vicious laugh, the rats quickly eat it. She announces that her gift is an eternal dream, into which the charming princess will plunge, pricking her finger. Everyone is terrified. But here the Lilac fairy appears, who has not yet presented her gift. She bends over the cradle and promises that a handsome prince will appear, who will wake up the young girl with a kiss, and she will live joyfully and happily.
First act
The princess has a birthday. She is 16 years old. Holidays are everywhere. The villagers dance, dance and have fun in the park of the king. 4 princes have arrived, and they are eager for the girl to choose her fiancé. Accompanied by the ladies-in-waiting with bouquets of flowers and wreaths, Princess Aurora rushes in. The princes are shocked by her unearthly beauty. With a half-childish playful grace, the girl begins to dance. The princes join her.
This is a light, airy variation in The Sleeping Beauty ballet. The summary should be continued by the fact that the princess suddenly notices an old woman sitting in the corner. She holds the spinning wheel and spindle and beats the beat with them. The princess flies up to her, grabs the spindle and, holding it like a scepter, begins to dance happily again. The four princes cannot stop looking at this sight. Suddenly she freezes and looks at the hand on which the blood flows: the sharp spindle pricked her. How will the plot of the ballet "Sleeping Beauty" continue? The summary can describe that the princess begins to rush, and then falls dead. Father, mother and princes rush to her. But then the old woman throws off her cloak, and the creepy fairy Carabosse appears in front of everyone at full height. She laughs at the general grief and confusion. The princes rush to her with swords, but Carabosse disappears in fire and smoke. From the depths of the stage, the light begins to glow, expanding - a magic fountain. The Lilac fairy appears from its jets.
She consoles her parents and promises that everyone will sleep for a hundred years, and she will guard their peace. Everyone returns to the castle, carrying Aurora on a stretcher. After a wave of a magic wand, all people freeze, and the castle is quickly surrounded by impenetrable thickets of lilacs. The fairy retinue appears, to which she orders that everyone is strictly watching so that no one can disturb Aurora's peace.
Second act
A century has already passed. Prince Desiree on the hunt. First, the courtiers appear to the sound of horns, and then the prince himself. Everyone was tired and sat down to rest, but then girls come out who want to become the prince's wife. The dance of the duchess begins, then the marquis, then the princes and, finally, the baroness. Desiree's heart is silent. He didn't like anyone. He asks everyone to leave, as he wants to rest alone. Suddenly a fantastically beautiful boat appears on the river. From it comes the godmother of the royal son - the Lilac fairy. The intriguing summary of Tchaikovsky's ballet The Sleeping Beauty continues. The fairy learns that the prince's heart is free and shows him the shadow of Princess Aurora, all pink in the setting light of the sun. She, dancing, now passionately, now languidly, all the time eludes the prince.
A charming girl appears every time in a place where the prince does not expect to see her: now on the river, now swinging on the branches of trees, now she is located among the flowers. Desiree is completely fascinated - this is his dream. But suddenly she disappears. The king's son rushes to the godmother and begs her to take him to this divine creation. They get into a mother-of-pearl boat and float down the river.
Night falls, and the moon illuminates their path with a mysterious silvery light. Finally, the enchanted castle becomes visible. The thick fog above him gradually dissipates. Everything is asleep, even the fire in the fireplace. With a kiss on the forehead, Desiree awakens Aurora. Together with her, the king and queen and the courtiers wake up. This is not the end of PI Tchaikovsky's ballet The Sleeping Beauty. The prince begs the king to give him a daughter as beautiful as dawn. The father joins their hands - such is fate.
Last action
On the square in front of the palace of King Florestan, guests from all the fairy tales of Charles Perrault gather for the wedding. The King and Queen, the bride and groom, the fairies of jewels: Sapphire, Silver, Gold, Diamonds go out under the march.

Then the general dance begins, which turns into an apotheosis - a grateful eulogy to the fairies, built by Tchaikovsky on the old song "Once upon a time Henri IV". The ballet The Sleeping Beauty, the content of which we have described, ends with a general stormy whirlwind. But to get the full impression of a magnificent fairy tale, you must see it on stage.
The Sleeping Beauty ballet: a summary for children
From the age of six, kids should be introduced to the wonderful synthesis of music, movements, costumes and decorations. And the king sent a messenger for the good fairy, and when the fairy arrived, she made it so that, together with the princess, all her maids of honor, servants, butler and dog plunged into sleep. Even fire and water fell asleep. Only the king and queen remained awake.
They went to their capital and forbade their subjects to approach the sleeping castle.

A hundred years have passed. Many kings have changed. The castle has long been forgotten.

ACTION ONE
Palace of King Florestan.
The King celebrates the birth of his long-awaited daughter Aurora. Guests from all over the kingdom came to the palace. Master of Ceremonies Catalabut checks the guest lists. No one seems to be forgotten.
The courtiers surround the cradle of the newborn. Good fairies bring their gifts to her. Suddenly there is a noise: a new fairy drove up to the palace, whom Catalabut forgot to invite to the holiday. This is Carabosse - the most evil and powerful fairy. At the christening of Aurora, she appeared in a chariot drawn by rats and dwarf freaks. In vain is the king, queen and courtiers trying to appease the wicked old woman. Her terrible prediction is revenge for being forgotten:
- Thanks to the gifts of six fairies, Aurora will be the most beautiful, adorable and intelligent princess in the world. Carabosse is unable to take these qualities away from her. But one day, having pricked her finger, Aurora will fall asleep, and her sleep will be eternal.
Everyone is shocked. But the Lilac fairy, who has not yet had time to present her little goddaughter, steps forward.
- Yes, little Aurora will fall asleep, as the fairy Carabosse wished. But not forever. The day will come when the young prince, enchanted by the beauty of the princess, will kiss her and wake her from a long sleep.

ACT TWO
Many years later. Hunting horns are heard in the forest where Prince Desiree is hunting. To amuse the prince, gentlemen and ladies arrange dances. But the prince remains indifferent - none of the ladies present touches his heart. He wants to be alone.
The Lilac Fairy appears. With a wave of her magic wand, she summons a vision of the beautiful Aurora. The rays of the setting sun illuminate her with a wonderful light, and the prince recognizes in her the one who often dreamed of him in his dreams.
Fascinated by her, Desiree follows this shadow, but she always eludes him. Finally, the vision disappears. The prince begs the fairy to show the way to Aurora.
In the distance you can see the castle, immersed in a deep sleep. Only Carabosse and her faithful servants are awake, ready to block the path of anyone who dares to enter the sleeping kingdom. But before the Lilac fairy, evil forces are powerless and forced to retreat.
Desiree enters the palace. The prince is full of joy and happiness: in front of him is his beautiful dream. Leaning towards the sleeping beauty, he kisses her tenderly. The best plates were immediately brought for her, but the golden box was not enough for her.
Naturally, this greatly offended the old sorceress. She muttered something unpleasant out loud. One sorceress heard this and hid in the children's room. She decided to be the last to say her wish. The moment came when the fairies had to give the newborn gifts.
The fairies presented her with various gifts: beauty, intelligence, kind heart, good voice, the ability to dance and play different instruments. However, the old sorceress wished that the princess died when she was pricked with a spindle. Everyone shuddered, but the last fairy promised that the princess would not die. She will make the princess sleep until the prince wakes her up. Her sleep will last a hundred years.
The king ordered to remove all the spindles from the castle, but after a while the princess pricked her finger and fell asleep. The kind sorceress made sure that everyone in the palace fell asleep, except for the king and queen.
A hundred years later, the prince went hunting. He saw the old palace, and began to ask passers-by about it. One man told him a story about a sleeping princess. The prince's heart burst into flames, and he hurried to the gates of the old castle.
When he entered the castle, he saw many sleeping people. He entered the luxurious room and saw the princess sleeping on the bed. The gold seemed dull compared to the beauty of the princess.
The prince knelt before the princess and she woke up. The castle began to rustle, and the rest of the inhabitants of the house woke up.
The bride and groom were invited to the dining room. They were served dishes of ancient cuisine, and the musicians played songs of the past.
The tale once again proves that good triumphs over evil, and love is able to withstand any evil deeds.

And suddenly, when the guests were seated at the table, the door opened, and an old fairy - the eighth in a row - who had been forgotten to invite to the feast, entered.
And they forgot to call her because for more than fifty years she had not left her tower, and everyone thought that she was dead.
The king at once ordered to give her the device. In less than a minute, the servants placed before the old fairy plates of the finest painted porcelain and a crystal goblet.

The old fairy, of course, was very offended. She thought that the king and queen were impolite and did not receive her as respectfully as they should. Pushing the plate and goblet away from her, she muttered a threat through her teeth.
Fortunately, the young fairy who was sitting next to her heard her murmur in time. Fearing that the old woman might decide to endow the little princess with something very unpleasant - for example, a long nose or a long tongue - she, as soon as the guests got up from the table, made her way into the nursery and hid there behind the curtain of the crib. The young fairy knew that in a dispute, the one who has the last word usually wins, and she wanted her wish to be the last.
And then came the most solemn moment of the holiday: the fairies entered the nursery and, one after another, began to present the newborn with the gifts that they had reserved for her.
One of the fairies wished that the princess was the most beautiful in the world. Another rewarded her with a gentle and kind heart. The third said that she would grow and bloom for everyone's joy. The fourth promised that the princess would learn to dance perfectly, the fifth promised that she would sing like a nightingale, and the sixth that she would play all musical instruments equally skillfully.
Finally, it was the old fairy's turn. The old woman bent over the bed and, shaking her head more with frustration than with old age, said that the princess would prick her hand with a spindle and die from this.
Everyone shuddered to learn what a terrible gift the evil witch had prepared for the little princess. No one could refrain from crying.
And then a young fairy appeared from behind the canopy and said loudly:
- Don't cry, king and queen! Your daughter will stay alive. True, I am not strong enough to make the spoken word ineffable. The princess will have to, sadly enough, prick her hand with a spindle, but from this she will not die, but will only fall asleep in deep sleep and will sleep for a whole hundred years, until the handsome prince wakes her up.
And yet the king decided to try to save the princess from the misfortune that the old evil fairy predicted for her. To do this, on pain of death, he forbade all his subjects to spin yarn and keep spindles and spinning wheels in his house.
The princess wanted to inspect the ancient castle. Running from room to room, she finally reached the very top of the palace tower.
There, in a small room under the roof, an old woman was sitting at a spinning wheel and calmly spinning yarn. Oddly enough, she never heard a word from anyone about the royal prohibition.
- What are you doing, auntie? Asked the princess, who had never seen a spinning wheel in her life.
“I am spinning yarn, my child,” the old woman replied, not even realizing what she was talking to the princess.
- Oh, this is very beautiful! - said the princess. - Let me try, will it work out as well as yours.

The Sleeping Beauty is a wonderful tale by Charles Perot. It talks about the all-conquering power of love, it conquers everything and even the witchcraft of evil sorcerers. There are two main characters in the tale - a princess and a prince.
The princess was a long-awaited child, heir to the throne. She was born very beautiful. The whole kingdom celebrated her birth. There were many guests who were happy and congratulated the happy parents. They gave magical gifts that were not sold anywhere. Only the evil sorceress was not happy, she was not even invited to the holiday. She appeared herself and predicted the death of the girl at the age of 15, from a sharp spindle. The prophecy came true, When the girl was 15 years old, she accidentally stumbled upon the only spinning wheel left in the kingdom and pricked her finger. But she did not die, but only fell asleep in a deep sleep, for a hundred years. Only a kiss of love could wake her up. The whole kingdom fell asleep with her. And for a hundred years the castle was hidden from human eyes by impenetrable thickets.
The prince was young, bold and handsome. When he found out about the sleeping princess, in a mysterious castle, he decided, no matter what, to wake up the princess and the whole castle. He overcame many obstacles, but still got to the castle. He saw the princess and fell in love with her at first sight. He kissed the princess and she awoke from her sleep. Love defeated the evil spell of the witch. The castle came to life and the parents agreed to the wedding of the prince and the princess.
The princess's parents, the King and Queen, have been expecting a child for a long time. And so they had a daughter, whom everyone loved, at the celebration of her birth, the evil sorceress cursed her, but the young good fairy softened him. Parents tried to protect their child from the curse, but they did not succeed. On the fifteenth birthday of the princess, the entire kingdom fell into a deep, deep sleep.
