Construction history

The Mother of God has always been especially revered both in Orthodox Christianity and in Catholicism. For a woman, she is the first intercessor, for a mother - a helper. She, the Blessed Virgin, is offered prayers by those who desperately need help and peace of mind. Probably for this reason in Russia there are so many churches dedicated to the Mother of God.

It is known that Fedor Ivanovich Sheremetyev, being a high position in the government, made a vow in the middle of the 17th century, according to which the Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos was built. With the beginning of construction, Sheremetyev gave up his honorary position and soon took vows and a new name - Theodosius.

From that time until the end of his days, his main task was to take care of the temple. By the beginning of 1734, the construction of the temple was completed, and for a long time the temple did not need restoration.

However, during the Soviet period, like most churches, the temple was plundered by the Bolsheviks. And, despite the fact that services were held in the church until the last day, in 1940, on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, the building of the church, by decision of the authorities, was transferred to workshops and military warehouses. Only 2 years after the victory of our troops in the war, in 1947, services were resumed in the Assumption Church.

Moreover, thanks to local residents in difficult years for the church, the main relics of the cathedral - 3 ancient icons - were saved.

State of the art

The building of the temple, founded in the 17th century, has survived to this day, however, it constantly needs repair and reconstruction. So, at the beginning of the two thousandth, the restoration of the temple began, during this period the foundation was strengthened, the roof was covered with copper and the entire temple painting was restored. New bells were made.

More recently, in 2014, a setting of pearls and precious stones was made to the icon of the Mother of God.

Description

Over its 300-year history, the temple has been restored several times both inside and outside. During such works, under the top layer of paint on the outer walls, as many as 9 layers of paint of different colors were found, which gives grounds for the assumption that at different times the church was painted in both emerald and burgundy and many other colors.

The greatness of the Assumption Cathedral is emphasized by its architectural features - it is built in two aisles, and the third tier is crowned with a bell tower.

The interior of the cathedral is represented by frescoes painted in the 19th century.

Parish activities

Currently, services are being held in the temple, and much attention is paid to social activities. Ministers and volunteers from the parishioners of the temple are working on the rehabilitation of people who are addicted to alcohol and drugs, help them, through faith in the Lord, to come to a clean life, free from addictions.

There is also a Sunday school for children and a youth club at the church.

Shrines

Among the revered shrines in the church, the iconographic image of the Savior Not Made by Hands is known; the parishioners of the church leave most of the candles with this icon. It is believed that this image, after prayer, heals from serious ailments.

Other revered icons of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin include:

 • the icon "Assurance of Thomas";
 • The Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God;
 • the icon "Seeking the Lost";

The Assumption Church is located on the territory of the old Veshnyakovo estate, first mentioned in the chronicles of the 16th century. Like neighboring Kuskovo, Veshnyakovo is associated with the name of the Sheremetevs. The church was built by Fyodor Ivanovich Sheremetev in 1644-1646 on a vow. During these years F.I. Sheremetev held one of the key positions in the Russian government. In 1646 he resigned, and in 1649 he accepted the monastic rank at the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and was named in the tonsure of Theodosius.

The temple rose on a high basement, surrounded on three sides by a gallery originally open. Instead of a dome, the building of the temple ended with a tent. A few years after the completion of the main construction, it was decided to attach symmetrical side-altars to the temple, also crowned with tents. In 1655, Patriarch Nikon, who was approached for a building permit, noted in the letter of the church that "... the chapters on those side-altars were round, not pointed." At the end of the 17th century, a bell tower was added to the temple; in 1734, it was built on and crowned with a spire.

During the more than 300-year history of the Assumption Church, it was restored several times from the inside and from the outside. Among the colors in which the temple was painted, there are burgundy, red, emerald, dark and light yellow. The Church of the Assumption is surrounded by an old parish cemetery, where residents of nearby villages - Kuskovo, Veshnyakovo, Vykhino, Vyazovka, as well as those who settled here later, when, in connection with the construction of the Ryazan railway line in 1880, the village gradually turns into a large suburban settlement Veshnyaki.

On May 22, 1922, the Bolsheviks removed from the church many church valuables, including precious cups, vessels, a tabernacle, altar crosses and the Gospel. The Assumption Church was closed on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, in 1940. During the war years, a military warehouse and repair shops were equipped in the building of the temple. On January 25, 1947, services were resumed in the church. Despite all the difficulties, it was possible to preserve some of the church values, including ancient icons. Some of the icons suffered greatly from dampness and temperature changes, as they had previously been stored in the bell tower. After the reconstruction, the cold upper church becomes warm and wintery. In 1951, a bowl with a spire was installed on the renovated bell tower.

Each Orthodox Christian has his own, special place where he feels good and where he can come and pray in silence. Ask God for help. Forgive enemies and foes. And touch a certain "holiness". A place after visiting which it becomes easier for you to experience some life problems. It becomes easier on the soul. Personally for me such a place in Moscow is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Veshnyaki.

It is to this temple that I go to pray in spite of the fact that I have long since moved from Ryazan Avenue. I hope you enjoy the photo walk through the temple and its surroundings. I have been waiting for permission to take a photo in it for almost two years ...

There are persistent rumors that this temple was anything for the famous actor and athlete Turchinsky ...

There is a church shop next to the temple, where you can order the necessary services. And buy icons.

It is dark inside the temple - but this is what makes it possible to feel the special atmosphere of this place

In this temple, almost all candles (as you may have noticed) are placed in the sand.

Previously, the Temple stood on a high basement, surrounded on three sides by a gallery originally open. Instead of a dome, the building of the temple ended with a tent. Patriarch Nikon was opposed to hipped roof churches and ordered to build new churches "about one, about three, about five chapters, and not to build hipped roof churches." At the end of the 17th century, a bell tower was added to the temple; in 1734, it was built on and crowned with a spire.

During the more than 300-year history of the Assumption Church, it was restored several times from the inside and from the outside. A special place to pray for the departed.

May God give us strength to master this path ...

The Virgin Mary appeared in Veshnyaki thanks to the efforts of the Sheremetev boyars. Fyodor Ivanovich, a member of this family, once made a vow that he would build a church in Veshnyakovo dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ. And he fulfilled his promise: with the permission of Patriarch Joseph, he erected a church. Construction went on from 1644 to 1646. In a fairly short time, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected. The temple in Veshnyaki turned out to be quite beautiful.

Rebuilding the temple

In the future, the church was rebuilt many times by Cherkassky and Odoevsky. They were the heirs of the Sheremetevs.

In the period from 1732 to 1734, Prince Alexei Mikhailovich Cherkassky began to fundamentally rebuild the church. He wanted the temple to be sustained in the contemporary European baroque at that time. The bell tower was redone beyond recognition, but the work stopped there. The year 1743 was marked by the fact that Veshnyakovo again returned to the possession of the Sheremetev boyars.

Further modifications

But what other modifications did the Temple of the Assumption of the Virgin in Veshnyaki undergo? In 1759 it was decided to remove the tent above the bell and install a thin long spire. After that, the upper part of the temple was no longer touched. However, subsequently, various repairs were carried out several times, affecting the lower area of the church. The temple was also expanded.

In 1838 the church was re-consecrated, in 1867 it was made more spacious. It survived the Patriotic War, and at the dawn of the twentieth century it was restored. This architectural monument has a really rich history. To really plunge into it, you need to personally come to Veshnyaki, it is better to visit on Sundays.

Confiscation of church valuables, closure of the temple

In 1922, the church suffered a sad fate. Temple values were seized (in other words, a robbery was carried out, covered with beautiful slogans), but it was not closed immediately - only after eighteen years.

Believers from the nearby villages of Nizovka and Vykhino secretly took some objects home, including the Royal Gates, which were blocking the altar.

Temple opening

It should be noted that the church did not remain closed for long. In 1947, the temple began to function again. It happened on January 25, when all the believers remembered Tatiana (martyr), to whom students so often turn with prayers. In honor of this saint, there is a throne in the church.

What values have survived?

The parishioners again brought the preserved icons to the Church of the Assumption in Veshnyaki. After a while, the Royal Doors again stood where it should be. Unfortunately, some of the images that were not taken away by the parishioners lay on the bell tower for a long time and were spoiled by dampness. But the rest of the icons were slightly restored and hung in their rightful place. Church frescoes created in the 18-19 centuries have also survived.

In 1951, the bell tower was slightly altered - a bowl began to flaunt above it, from which a beautiful spire "grows". The parish of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos became famous for such architectural splendor. Many believers and simply interested people wanted to see the church in Veshnyaki.

Thrones and chapels

Currently, the main throne of the Veshnyakovskaya church is consecrated in memory of the Resurrection of the Word. It also has two side-chapels. They are consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas. In addition, there is a portable throne. He is sanctified in the name

What about the lower temple? It is dedicated to the celebration of the Dormition of the Mother of God. He has a side chapel. It is dedicated to the great martyr Tatiana. And the left side-altar - to the Monk Sergius of Radonezh.

Gorgeous icons

The temple has a huge number of shrines and famous images, including those created in the 17th century. Here you can see the brightened (independently renewed) right during the service called "Recovery of the Dead". There is also the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, once saved from invaders. The icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands deserves special attention, which, in the opinion of parishioners, is capable of granting recovery.

The image of the Iberian Mother of God also deserves all respect. Most recently, the church was presented with a beautiful icon of Jesus called "Carrying the Cross". These are the values that the parish of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos has. The temple in Veshnyaki is a place where you can see real masterpieces.

The Romanovs

In the old days, this church was visited many times by famous personalities, for example, Alexander III and Catherine the Great. In 2003, the memorable date of the Romanovs' house was celebrated, and then a thanksgiving service dedicated to these people was held.

Church today

Today the church is attended by many young people, and special support is provided to those who have become addicted to drugs.

Believers believe that they have a responsibility to help everyone who needs it. There is a Sunday school.

The Dormition of the Theotokos in Veshnyaki is closely connected with the history of the Sheremetev boyar family. It was a representative of this family - Fedor Ivanovich Sheremetev - who erected in 1644-1646. on a vow (a promise before God) with the permission of Patriarch Joseph on the lands of the former Veshnyakovo heath belonging to him in honor of Christ's Resurrection. It was a stone building in the pre-Nikon style, which had 2 floors and was crowned with a tent. It was surrounded by gulbis (open galleries), connecting it with a high hipped bell tower. In the basement, the lower one was arranged - the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, after which this one is called today. There was also a side-chapel of the most revered saint in Russia - Nicholas, Mir of Lycia (the city where the saint was a bishop during his lifetime) the Wonderworker.

Subsequently, the temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the heirs of the Sheremetev family - the Odoevsky and Cherkassky. In 1656, Prince Nikita Odoevsky laid a brick on the upper gulbische, adding 2 side-chapels, into one of which (right) an altar was carried in honor of St. Nicholas, and the other (left) was consecrated in the name of St. the apostle James, the heavenly patron of the grandson of F.I. Sheremetev, who "reposed in Bose" in 1650 in the monastic rank (named Theodosius). They also wanted to complete the side-altars with tents, but Nikon, who had ascended to the patriarchal throne by that time and personally supervised the construction of churches, ordered to install round chapters on the side-altars (the Lord of tents really did not like it). And so it happened that the tent-roofed main temple was surrounded by round onions of the side buildings.

In 1732-1734. Another heir of the Sheremetevs, the Imperial Chancellor, Prince Alexei Mikhailovich Cherkassky, was involved in a significant reconstruction of the temple. He decided to change it in the then fashionable European Baroque style. They managed to greatly modify the bell tower, but the ardor of the prince died away.

In 1743 Veshnyakovo again returned directly to the possession of the Sheremetevs.

Well with holy water at the walls of the temple
and churchyard

In 1759, instead of a tent above the bell tower, a tall thin spire appeared and no further alterations were made on it, while the temple itself was restored and expanded many times. It survived the attack of the French, was rededicated in 1838, expanded in 1867, and renovated at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1922 did not pass xframes of the Assumption of the Virgin in Veshnyaki confiscation of church valuables (in other words, outright robbery, covered by noble slogans), but it was closed by one of the last in Moscow - in 1940. Parishioners from the neighboring villages of Vykhino and Nizovka quietly dismantled part of the church property to their homes (they even took away the Royal Gates, which closed the entrance to the altar).

Lower (Assumption) Church inside

However, the inaction was short-lived from the point of view of history. Already in 1947, the Assumption Church in Veshnyaki again opened its doors to believers. It happened on January 25 - on the day of memory of the great martyr Tatiana, the patroness of students, in whose honor there is a portable altar in the church in the lower (Assumption) church.

People began to return the saved icons. Returned to its rightful place after long persuasion and the Royal Doors. Unfortunately, some of the icons, those that were not disassembled by the residents, were kept for a long time in the bell tower and were practically destroyed by dampness. But others, after restoration, returned to the iconostasis. The frescoes of the temple, painted in the 18th-19th centuries, have also survived.

Temple tent and
bell tower spire

In 1951, the bell tower received a new completion in the form of a bowl with a spire at the end.

Today, the main altar of the upper church in Veshnyakovskaya church is consecrated in honor of the Resurrection of the Word, its 2 chapels - in the name of St. Nicholas and the prophet Elijah, there is also a portable throne in honor of St. Jacob Zavedeev. The lower church is dedicated to the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, its left chapel in the side gallery is St. Sergius of Radonezh, attached - naval center. Tatiane.

Church house

In the church there are many shrines and especially revered icons (some are letters from the 17th century). Among them is the self-renewed (enlightened) icon of the Mother of God "Seeking the Lost" right before the eyes of people, the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, once rescued from German invaders from near Smolensk, the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands, glorified by the miracle of healing, the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God. Not so long ago, a rather rare image of the Savior "Carrying the Cross" was donated to the temple.

Cover of the "Holy Spring" magazine

In tsarist times, this temple was repeatedly visited by crowned persons, including Catherine the Great and Alexander III. In 2003, during the celebration of the anniversary of the Romanov dynasty, a thanksgiving service was served in honor of this family, which was attended by the leaders of the Russian Nobility Assembly.

I would like to add that at the present time the church is doing a lot of work with the youth, for which the "Veishnyakovskaya squad" has been organized, assistance to drug addicts is being provided, which the group "Inspiration" is engaged in, the parishioners of the church are united by a community of mercy, helping all those in need. There is a Sunday school, the publication for children "Orthodox Ray" and the magazine "Holy Spring" are published.
